At one time, economizers were supplied with
boilers. That was the most economical way of adding heating surface,
thereby increasing boiler output. Today, efficiency is a high priority.
You should consider that a normal boiler loses approximately 22% of
its heat to the flue gases. Conventional economizers transfer heat from
flue gas to boiler feedwater. Efficiency is increased by approximately
one percent for each 40 degrees F reduction in flue gas temperature.
This normally results in fuel savings of 6-8%.
In the right application, economizers can
provide fuel savings of 16-18%. Efficiencies of 95% are achievable.
Other methods of heat recovery are as follows: blowdown water heat recovery,
excess air trimming and speed control of fans and pumps. Bacon Engineering
has experience in all of these methods, and can offer designs, equipment
and installation proposals.
